Project 52: Week 17
Athens, Greece: Wednesday evening - Spring. Yoshinoyama, Japan: Wednesday evening - Spring.
"The Tower of the Winds is an octagonal Roman tower located in the ruins of the Roman Agora (marketplace). It was designed as a clock, a compass and a wind vane. Talk about multi-purpose design! It's a clock: there a sundials on each face of the tower. It's a compass: each side of the tower faces a certain direction (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW). And it was a wind vane: there used to be a triton weather vane on the top to indicate the direction of the wind. Clever Romans! In this photo you can see the ruins of the Acropolis on the hill behind the tower. Ancient Roman and Ancient Greek ruins side-by-side."
